On the base of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the meeting of Club of “green economy” leading companies was held with the participation of Wolfgang Messinger, General Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The club unites scientific institutions, big industrial and agricultural companies of Dnipropetrovsk oblast, which implement projects on energy saving technologies and responsible energy use. The series of “green decisions” are realized with the support of the German Government and experts.
This time, PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has been chosen as the platform to share experiences in the field of “green decisions”. Representatives of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, industrial, chemical, food and processing companies, as well as students of related universities attended the meeting. The guests discussed innovations in reduction of energy consumption, assessed the effectiveness of environmental projects, as well as observed the performance of metallurgical giant of Ukraine in this field.
Oleksandr Efremov, Head of Energy Efficiency Department, PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih:
– Modernization of our production implies improvement of efficiency and use of energy resources, having significant environmental effect. For example, we succeeded to reduce natural gas consumption almost twice since privatization of the company. In the meantime, we increased the use of pulverized fuel for blast furnace No.9 by building the complex for its preparation and injection. In next few years, we plan to reduce the consumption of natural gas by starting up two new continuous casting machines, installing charge heaters on lime rotary furnaces, reconstructing two light-section mills.
Now we continue the implementation of our innovative project for lime production, which has no analogues in Ukraine, – usage of biofuel for lime rotary furnaces. This project gives an opportunity to save up to 3 mln cubic meters of natural gas per month. The powdered peels of sunflower seeds are used as an alternative to natural gas. It was identified that 2.2 tons of powdered peels replace 1 000 cubic meters of natural gas. Moreover, this amount of biofuel is about three times cheaper.
Liana Maksimenko, Head of Environment Protection Department, PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih:
– Since the foreign investor joined the plant, the total investment in ecology made UAH5.3 bln. Actions taken for environment protection enabled to reduce the emissions by 34.4%, level of wastewater discharge – by 64.1% and amount of waste disposal – by 45.1%. We managed to achieve environmental standards on 110 gas cleaning units. To achieve environmental standards, we implemented the best out of available technologies (BREF-technologies) on nine main aggregates: BOF No.4, 5 and 6, blast furnaces No.6 and No.8, sinter machine No.6, coke-oven batteries No.3, 4, 6.
Wolfgang Messinger, General Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany:
– “Green Economy” is one of the top-priority initiatives of our cooperation in the field of economic development. The Community of International Cooperation GIZ is realizing this program in Ukraine to divert industrial footprint by implementing energy saving technologies and projects on environment protection. Kryvyi Rih is the heart of industrial landscape of Ukraine, key constituent of the country’s economic development. When visiting the production sites of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, I was impressed by the magnitude of the company and investments in the plant’s development. We observed active construction works of aggregates and made sure that the new coke-oven battery is operated eco-friendly and safely. This investment is a part of the company’s essential investments aimed at improvement of environmental performance and responsible use of resources.
